Rufus is her band. Khan was raised a Catholic. Her primary school was of Saint Thomas the Apostle Church located in Hyde Park. Her grandmother introduced her music when she was young. Khan began to be a huge fan of rhythm and blues music as an early teen, and when she was eleven began a group of girls called the Crystalettes comprising the sister Taka. In the latter half of 1960s Khan attended several protests for civil rights and marches with her father's second spouse Connie who was a staunch fan of the movement.
